SELMA, AL (WSFA) -

Ja'Terrika Thomas, 4, who was seriously injured after being attacked by a pit bill in Selma, is now recovering at home.

Police responded to the 2100 block of Lauderdale Street, which is close to Selma Highway School, at 4:45 p.m. Friday.

The child was transported to Vaughan Hospital where she received 12 staples for lacerations to her face and head.

Witnesses say the dog bit the girl on the face and head for at least a minute before her family could beat the dog away.

"I saw blood everywhere and I just started screaming," said Caroline Thomas, the mother of the victim.

Thomas said at first, the dog was very playful.

"He was just playing with her at first," Thomas said.

Police say the dog belonged to the next door neighbor. The owner reportedly let the dog out to clean his cage but failed to secure the animal.

Police say the property owner and her grandson, who owns the dog, are facing multiple charges under the city's leash law.

Caroline says her daughter is sore, but is expected to make a full recovery. The dog is being held at the city's animal shelter.
