TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -

A Tuscaloosa attorney is accused of stealing more than $80,000 from four Tuscaloosa County homeowners associations.

Tuscaloosa Police say Jeffery Riley, 50, took the money over four years from the Fox Run Homeowners Association, Thornbury Homeowners Association, The Village at Magnolia Homeowners Association, and the Clear Creek Colony Homeowners Association.

The associations filed theft reports in late 2013.

"It kinda just knotted my stomach up knowing at that moment that someone was taking our money," Steve Phelps, Director of the Village at Magnolia Homeowners Association said.

Phelps said several months ago he was tipped off that Riley was allegedly taking thousands of dollars from them. That's when the association contacted law enforcement and fired Riley.

"We took actions immediately to stop the bleeding," Phelps said.

Phelps says Riley didn't do a lot of damage at his association but others reportedly suffered greatly.

"It's just a terrible feeling knowing these individuals that live in the neighborhood, they pay their money every year and we pay ours, and for someone just to get it for no reason. It's just a hard feeling, especially when you don't earn it," Phelps added.

A grand jury handed down indictments earlier this month and Riley was arrested Tuesday morning. He is being held on a $30,000 bond and is charged with four counts of theft.
