FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

Which soup reigns supreme? Dozens of contenders in the Shoals battled it out for the title and a good cause at Wednesday's Empty Bowl Luncheon.

The Salvation Army's annual Empty Bowl Luncheon is one of the biggest lunch time social events of the year. Not only do guests get to sample soups from Shoals restaurants and bakeries, there's also a silent auction and fashion show.

The Women's Auxiliary works year-round preparing for the luncheon. All the money raised at the event goes towards the Salvation Army's fight to end hunger. The money will help fund most of the feeding the Salvation Army does from the shelter to Christmas baskets and beyond.

The event serves those in Colbert, Franklin and Lauderdale Counties.

"It's very exciting and it means a lot to me. I'm very appreciative. We at the Salvation Army are all very appreciative to see this many people come out and support us. It's a good social event but it's also a good way to help your fellow man. It's very encouraging," said Major Jean Wilson, Shoals Salvation Army.

Who won the best soup of the Shoals? The 2014 bragging rights went too The Pie Factory located on Court Street in Florence.
