BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Authorities with the Birmingham Police Department have confirmed that three people were shot in the 4300 block of Jackson Street in Birmingham on Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting happened shortly before 4 p.m. in the Inglenook community.

All three victims were transported by ambulance to the hospital. They have non-life-threatening injuries, Deputy Chief Henry Irby said.

The preliminary investigation indicates the shooting may have been the result of an apparent robbery, Irby said on Thursday.

Sgt. Sean Edwards confirmed Wednesday that they had a person of interest in the case, but no one had been charged.

Police responded to two separate scenes connected to the shooting. One was at a home on Jackson Street and another was in an area about a block and a half south, on Inglenook Street.

Shortly before 4 p.m., an off-duty officer heard shots ring out. He called for more officers to respond to the area.

Police said one victim was standing outside of a car and three other men were inside a silver car. They say there was a shootout between them, then the three people in the car got out of the vehicle and ran to Jackson Street to get help.

People in the community have gathered near the scene of the shooting, trying to find out what happened. The story neighbors are giving differs slightly from the information police have released.

One neighbor says around 10 adults and 10 kids were outside their homes when the shooting happened.

The neighbor said a silver car pulled up, one person got out and spoke to a lone victim who was standing outside. The person got back into the car, then the people inside the car opened fire at the victim, the witness said.

Neighbors said the silver car backed up, tried to turn around, but crashed into a tree. That's when the people inside bailed and ran toward Jackson Street, according to witnesses.

Another discrepancy is the number of people inside the silver car: police say three, while neighbors say they saw four men inside the vehicle.

Police detectives are still interviewing the victims, witnesses and possible suspects, Irby said on Thursday. He said he should have more information about the investigation soon.
