COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Imagine driving down the road and getting hit by a falling traffic light. That's what happened to one woman a couple of weeks ago.

The incident happened March 30 on Two Notch Road near Interstate 20.

A calm Diane Peters called 911 just after the light plunged through the passenger side windshield of the rental car she was driving. "One of the traffic lights came down through my car window," says Peters.

When asked if she needs an ambulance, Peters says she might need to get checked out. "I got glass everywhere," says Peters. "That thing came down through my windshield."

"This is ridiculous," says Peters, who was the only person in the car.

A state construction engineer says the light, which is maintained by the South Carolina Department of Transportation, was improperly installed and loosened by high winds.

Winds were gusting at or near 25 mph for part of the afternoon.

A spokesperson for the DOT said they would inspect all signals on Tow Notch Road and Firelane Road.

The lights weigh up to 50 pounds.
