Residents of an east Prattville neighborhood are concerned about a pending rezoning of a parcel of land and what it could mean for the subdivision.
It's a controversial matter that was the subject of a public hearing at the Prattville Planning Commission Thursday afternoon.
Developers want to bring in a large apartment complex. Residents say it's just not feasible for their small neighborhood.
"Pecan Ridge is a small subdivision. The roads are very small," Prattville resident David Gatch said.
There's only one entrance into the Pecan Ridge subdivision, and that's why many residents say adding nearly 150 apartments with no additional access roads would be a traffic nightmare.
"They plan to build this road and extend it through the woods, cut down the woods and build these apartments," Prattville resident Amanda Seen said.
"The traffic would be just terrible if they build those apartment complexes and all those cars have to get on a two-lane highway. It's already terrible and it would only make it 10 times worse with 150 apartments," Prattville resident Bob Adams said.
They took their concerns to the Prattville Planning Commission and the Developer TBG Residential.
The issue is the developer wants all 20 acres to the north of Pecan Ridge rezoned for the use of multi-family dwellings instead of just sticking with the 13 acres that's already zoned for his proposal of 96 apartments. This will allow room to add 64 more apartments -- a total of 160.
"The community came together. There were people out petitioning, signing flyers," Seen said.
"If it has got to happen, protect our streets. Give them different access, don't bring all the traffic right through these small streets," Gatch said.
