Autaugaville H.S. seniors set first in school history milestone

AUTAUGAVILLE, AL (WSFA) -

The entire senior class at Autaugaville High School is going to college -- a first in school history.

Of the 21 seniors, nine received scholarships, and one of the nine, Jasmine Frazier, has $300,000 in scholarships on the table.

The students on the verge of graduating will tell you it was their guidance counselor, Greta McGowan, who got them to think beyond high school and chase a dream.

"I grew up poor and the fact my mother couldn't send me to college made me realized you have to get out there and look for it," McGowan said.

Senior Verlonda Hopson earned a Bryant-Jordan college scholarship worth $2,500. Verlonda says it was McGowan who kept pushing and pushing, driving home the point the senior class of 2014 can do better and achieve so much more.

"She just kept after us and telling us we need to do something and not just sit around and waste our time," said Verlonda.

Audreanna Matthews didn't receive any money for college but may have earned something just as special -- the gift of perseverance.

"I am very pleased because I will be the first in my family to go to college," said Audreanna who is getting financial aid to help pay for her college costs.

Graduation is six weeks away and seniors like Verlonda, Jasmine and Audreanna will go their separate ways to college, never forgetting the straight-shooting counselor who helped pave the way.
