PEARL, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Eighteen-year-old Jacob Daniels can barely wipe the smile off his face, in anticipation of his Senior Prom Friday night. His mother Lori helps him try on his tuxedo as he talks about the dream girl he'll be arm in arm with.
"Actually it's my girlfriend," he tells us, adding that he'll be riding in a limousine, "with her."
"He always called me his girlfriend, but he had 50 other girlfriends too, but he would always be like you're my number 1," says 19-year-old London May, the girl he's talking about.
May graduated from Pearl High School last year. She's known Daniels, who has Down Syndrome, most of her life. But she's a USM Freshman now, and hasn't seen him in a year.
The prom date plan began when Daniels' mom, Lori Meadows, posted a status on Facebook.
"I had just mentioned on Facebook that Jacob had not asked anyone to the prom yet because he was scared to ask anybody," Meadows says.
"As soon as I saw it, I was like pick me, that's exactly what I said on the Facebook post. She wrote me, and she was so excited," says May
"His face lit up, he said yes ma'am, I would love for you to take me to the prom," Meadows tells us.
"She walked me to class every day, and eats with us every day," adds Daniels.
This will not be Daniels' first date. He went to prom last year too. But this will be his last hurrah before graduation, and he's planning for a night to remember.
"Dance and have fun with my friends," he says of his plans.
May is majoring in elementary special education. She says there will be other special needs students in the limousine with them heading to the prom.
"It's going to be a great chance for Jacob. I want it to be all about him and not about me," she says.
