DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

There are more and more people who are living longer and making every moment count. Meet Jack and Vennette Charlton. They are going into their 65th year of marriage and working hard to keep their bodies and minds strong.

"You got to be tough, that's the first thing," said Jack.

"It's not for sissies," laughed Vennette.

These octogenarians should know Jack is an 87-year-old retiree, while his bride is not far behind him at 83. Now and then, Jack takes things seriously.

"You realize that you're lucky to still be here at this point, so we decided that we would just stretch it out a little bit by coming over here and working with Conley," said Jack. "If he doesn't kill us, we might live even longer for it."

Personal trainer Conley Duncan works them hard. The couple participate in a lot of activities each day.

"I generally get out and walk some every day, and I like to read, like to visit friends, have a fair amount of church activity," said Jack.

"I play a lot of bridge. I love cooking, I love eating," said Vennette.

They look forward to the future and time with family. They are working to make certain they can enjoy that time.

"Always I've hated exercise until we got mixed up with Conley," said Vennette. "It's fun. I'm making myself do it. I want to hold what I've got."

When it comes to not only living a longer life, but a healthier, happier life, we got some weighty advice.

"Happy marriage. 65 years. Close ties with our God, our church, and just good genes too I guess," said Vennette.

A positive attitude, living life to the fullest.
