HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

If you are thinking about buying a bunny or a baby chick as an Easter gift, the Humane Society is asking you to do your homework first.

The shelter said these pets can be a lot of work, and many people don't realize what they are getting into. The animals can require a lot of responsibility and care.

"Baby chicks and baby ducks can't maintain their own body temperatures, so they require supplemental heat, but they have to have a way to get away from that so they are very fragile," said Warren Candler with the Greater Huntsville Humane Society.

The shelter said it becomes overwhelmed with these animals throughout the year, when families decide they can no longer care for them, but they say these animals can make for great pets if you are prepared.
