WILCOX COUNTY, AL (WSFA) -
Officials have released the names of the victims of the fatal mobile home fire that occurred Monday in Wilcox County off
Sheriff Earnest Ivey Evans says a total of five people were inside at
the time of the blaze but three were able to escape. 32-year-old Flora Jean Smith and her 2-year-old daughter Dorshay Searight were unable to escape the fire resulting in their deaths.
Evans says the mother of two was staying with a couple in their rented mobile home in Camden when the fire sparked around 1 a.m. He says the mother likely died attempting to rescue her toddler. After she got the first child got out of the burning house she went back for the 2-year-old, but it was too late.
"It's a tragedy anytime something like this happens, especially [with] a child. It becomes a big thing with Wilcox County because we are a close knit people in a sense. We come together when something like this happens," Evans said.
The State Fire Marshal's Office has taken the lead on the investigation.
It is leaning on the Department of Forensics to formally identify the bodies.
Now fire investigators are left to sift through the ashes to determine what caused the blaze. The deaths are the 56th and 57th fire fatalities in Alabama this year.
