BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
Birmingham City officials say a portion of Coalburg Road will be closed until early summer to be widened.
Officials say that the closure was prompted by the "extraordinary" amount of rain in the last few weeks.
Coalburg Road will be closed between Daniel Payne Drive and Corridor X/I-22 for six to eight weeks. Weather permitting, the road will be re-opened June 9, 2014.
The city has suggested following detours between Corridor X and I-65:
I-22 southbound to Highway 78 southbound to Daniel Payne Drive to I-65 (and reverse to travel north)
1-22 southbound to Highway 78 to Finley Boulevard to I-65 (and reverse to travel north)
In Walker County, some lanes along 1-22 westbound are expected to be closed for paving until approximately July 14. All westbound lanes of I-22 at Exit 65 (Industrial Boulevard Interchange) will be detoured down Industrial Boulevard to AL 5, then west on AL 5 through Jasper and re-entering I-22 west of Jasper at Exit 57.
In Jefferson County, starting April 21, the northbound on ramp at Daniel Payne Drive will be closed to remove the old ramp, shift traffic and install a new ramp. This work will require the complete shutdown of the existing I-65 northbound ramp for seven days.
During this time all traffic will be detoured via I-65 southbound and 33rd Avenue North (Exit 263). All vehicles exiting Daniel Payne Drove (Exit 264) and vehicles traveling east and west on Daniel Payne Drive will not be able to get on I-65 northbound directly.
Detours will be as follows: Daniel Payne Drive, turn LEFT (for westbound traffic) and RIGHT (for eastbound traffic) onto the I-65 southbound on ramp.
• Stay in the right travel lane for approximately 1/4 mile and take exit 263 to 33rd Avenue North.
• Turn LEFT on 33rd Avenue North.
• Make the first LEFT, turn and keep left for I-65 northbound.
