MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - A sign posted outside a Memphis strip club sparked outrage among a group of single moms.

On Tuesday morning, the marquee at The Pony, an adult nightclub on Winchester Avenue, said "Support Single Moms."

The Pony touts itself as "America's Strip Joint" on the sign inviting people to see the "hottest ladies" and drink the "coldest beer."

The group of single moms do not see any connection between hot ladies, cold beer, and single moms.

It appears as though the club may understand the outrage. After WMC Action News 5 contacted The Pony about the controversy, the message was changed to a supportive message for the Memphis Grizzlies.

"When I first saw it, I was like, 'Wow, is this a joke?'" said single mom Marceia Miller about the earlier message on the sign.

"It's a disgrace," added Ashley Grayson. "It's degrading."

Miller and Grayson are members of a Memphis advocacy and support group for single mothers called Successful Single Moms.

Some of the women in the group say it has been humiliating passing by the "Support Single Moms" sign for the past two weeks.

"I think any woman that works and can see the plight of a single mom would find that degrading and be outraged by it," said Nicole Gates, who is also a single mom.

"I'm a single mom. I have a business. Support that," said Grayson. "Don't categorize everybody and say you're supporting single moms by coming to The Pony. No. Because I don't work there."

"You aren't helping single mothers," agreed Yolanda Gates. "You aren't empowering them. You're doing this to beef up your pockets. You're doing this to generate business for yourself."

The single moms group questions whether the women who work at The Pony are actually being supported, or if they are being put in harm's way.

"They have to tip out the bartender and the bouncer and the club owner," said Gates. "It's crazy. Are they really making a living wage?"

They also question how children will interpret the message.

WMC Action News 5 contacted The Pony, but they opted not to comment.

"We just want the sign to come down," said Irene Ford.

And that is exactly what happened. The marquee changed within an hour of WMC Action News 5's phone call to the strip club.
