SELMA, AL (WSFA) -

Selma police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man early Tuesday morning.

According to a news release from the police department, officers and EMTs responded to the 1700 block of St. Phillips St., at 12:25 a.m. Tuesday in reference to shots being fired.

When they arrived, they were redirected across the street to the 1600 block of 1st Ave., where they found a man who was having trouble breathing and tried to convince him he needed medical attention.

According to police, the man refused and started losing consciousness. He was transported to the ER and pronounced dead on arrival.

Doctors discovered the man had suffered a gunshot wound to his upper left chest area.

The four other victims told police that two masked men attempted to rob them in a yard in the 1700 block of St. Philips St. The five men took off running and shots were fired at them. That's when the victim was struck.

This is the third murder of the year in Selma.

The Selma Police Department is asking anyone with information concerning this shooting to notify the Selma Police Department at (334) 874-2125, Secret Witness Line (334) 874-2190 or Crime Stoppers at 1-866-442-7463.
