Montgomery Academy wins Class 1A-3A tennis championship

MONTGOMERY, AL (AHSAA) - Montgomery Academy won the Class 1A-3A state boys tennis championship with a dominating team performance Tuesday at Montgomery's Lagoon Park, winning four singles championships and three doubles titles.

The Eagles, who now own 13 boys' state championships overall, totaled 72 points to win easily over runner-up Trinity Presbyterian, which had 34 points. Altamont was third with 29 points and Bayside Academy fourth with 25.

Bayside's Trent Kennegieter beat Westbrook Christian's Charley Rowe 6-1, 6-1 to claim the No. 1 singles title. It marked the second straight No. 1 crown for the Bayside freshman and the fourth in a row for the Admirals overall.

Montgomery Academy netters Will Spain, Bonner McLemore, Samuel Adams and Allen Millsap captured singles championships at No. 2, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. McLemore is the only senior on Eagles Coach David Bethea's roster. The state title was Montgomery Academy's fourth in a row and 10th since 2001.

Hunter Carroll and Clayton Muller combined to capture the No. 1 doubles championship with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Tyler Vermillian and Charles Trotman of Montgomery rival Trinity Presbyterian.  Spain and Dunlap won at No. 2 doubles and the team of McLemore and James Torbert made it a sweep, winning the No. 3 doubles crown.

Montgomery Academy and Trinity finished 1-2 in the team standings in 2013 as well.
