MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

The Madison County Commission voted on Wednesday to stop taking cash payments for private works. The decision impacts thousands of transactions annually.

Commission Chairman Dale Strong asked the board to debate abolishing private works in its entirety. Ultimately, the commission voted to stop the cash payments but continue with providing private works to Madison County citizens.

Private works primarily deals with dropping off half and full loads of gravel to citizens using county crews. Madison County charges up to $125 to haul and drop off the load.

District One Commissioner Roger Jones said his district's citizens spent more than $65,000 in private works over the last six months. According to Jones, 24 percent of those transactions were made with cash.

All of the Madison County Commission voted in favor of the change except for Commissioner Bob Harrison, who abstained.

The vote comes weeks after authorities arrested a former commission employee for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars. Commissioner Eddie Sisk said it comes down to accountability, and since he first uncovered discrepancies by that former employee, he's pushed to move away from taking cash for private works.

"The problem with the cash is when you send someone out, the cash is trading hands with several people," explained Sisk. "The truck driver has to take it; if they don't have change, he's got to go somewhere and get change for them, make change, come back, and then it comes into the district office. I just want to eliminate all that."

The commission briefly discussed abolishing private works altogether before stopping the discussion and voted to only end cash payments, leaving the services intact.
