Arpaio seek changes to order in profile case

Posted: Updated:

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's lawyers asked a judge Wednesday to exempt some sheriff's employees and volunteers from a requirement that they read a summary of key findings in a racial profiling case against the police agency.

Last week, U.S. District Judge Murray Snow ordered sheriff's deputies, civilian employees and volunteers such as posse members to read the summary after he concluded Arpaio had mischaracterized a ruling in which the agency was found to have racially profiled Latinos in its immigration and traffic patrols.

Arpaio's lawyers say it's unnecessary to have people working in the county's jail system and some posse volunteers read the summaries because they aren't involved in street enforcement.

Opposing lawyers say there was ample justification for the requirement to be applied on a broad basis.
