The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the shooting death of a man at a Tallassee gas station at the request of the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, or ABC.
Authorities taped off the Marathon gas station parking lot and placed a tarp over a red Honda Civic where the man's body remained during Wednesday evening's investigation.
According to the Associated Press, Tallassee Police Chief Jimmy Rodgers identified the man as 38-year-old Bobby Jay Coats IV of Eclectic/Tallassee.
ABI says it won't release any details pending its inquiry. Once the investigation is complete, the agency says it will turn its findings over to the Elmore County District Attorney's office.
District Attorney Randall Houston says the shooting involved law enforcement but did not know if any officers fired shots at the man. Houston says initial reports indicate that the man shot himself and that an ABC agent was involved.
Members of Coats' family contacted WSFA 12 News late Wednesday evening to dispute the claim that their loved one shot himself.
