An Arizona Senate panel has approved two bills that greatly expand eligibility for the state's school voucher program.
The Senate Education Committee voted to advance the bills on Thursday.
One expands the program allowing children to use public money for private schools to all residents of Indian reservations. Senate Bill 1332 is sponsored by Democratic Sen. Carlyle Begay of Ganado but backed by the Center for Arizona Policy.
Senate Bill 1434 by Sen. Debbie Lesko of Peoria allows anyone turned away from a public school during open enrollment to get a private school voucher.
The Arizona Empowerment Scholarship Accounts program began in 2011 and was aimed at children with disabilities. Legislators have expanded the program repeatedly sine it was enacted.
