PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Phoenix police said a tire separation caused a rollover crash that killed the driver of an SUV early Thursday morning near Papago Park in Phoenix.

The driver, 64-year-old Howard Wilson Laporte, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected during the rollover, said Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson. He was the only one in the SUV.

Thompson said the tread separated on a rear tire and it appeared that Laporte applied the brakes, overcorrected and drove off the right shoulder before colliding with the mountain side and rolling near 5200 E. McDowell Rd.

Three nurses were driving by and tried to help the man, but he died of his injuries, Thompson said.

The crash happened about 3 a.m. and closed westbound McDowell Road at Galvin Parkway, Thompson said.

Eastbound traffic was restricted but vehicles were moving. All traffic was flowing normally at 7 a.m., Thompson said.

He said the investigation was continuing.
