NOPD: Body found in elevator shaft had no signs of trauma

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

Police say a body found in an elevator shaft Thursday morning was in an advanced stage of decomposition and likely had been there for some time.

Police made the discovery after a repairman called them to a dilapidated, three-story apartment building in the 2600 block of Claiborne Avenue to investigate human remains.

An NOPD spokesman said there were no visible signs of trauma or foul play.

The Orleans Parish coroner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Nearby residents say the building was heavily damaged during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and had been unoccupied since then. Renovation work resumed at the site recently.
