Railroad crossing repairs continue in Auburn and Opelika

(WTVM) -

Since early march, the CSX Corporation has been repairing railroad crossings throughout Auburn and Opelika.

"They've been redoing 2,500 crossties a day. So redoing crossties, redoing track, they've had some settling issues that we wouldn't notice day to day, but CSX has noticed it. So they're redoing the tracks and from my understanding they've come all the way from Montgomery, through here going to Columbus," explains City of Auburn's Public Works Construction and Maintenance Division Manager, Jay Uphold.

On April 10th, a CSX train collided with a tractor trailer at the Webster Road crossing when the truck became stuck on the track.

This happened to a second truck in the same location and on Byrd Street a tractor-trailer became stuck too, raising concerns with residents.

Since then CSX has hired a contractor to come back in a redo asphalt work that was originally reshaped.

"We've got warning signs up, warning signs for trucks to not cross those tracks and trucks really should avoid those areas anyway if possible," explains Uphold.

CSX is also finishing up repairs at the crossroads at Railroad Avenue on 7th and 9th Streets in Opelika.

Work has taken longer than expected due to issues with the track.

The last two railroad crossings in Auburn to receive an update are at Dead Road and East University Avenue.

CSX says they will begin construction after Auburn University's graduation.

The City says they will give plenty of notice to residents about when those traffic detours will begin."

"We've been in communication with CSX since a couple of months ago," says Uphold, "Making sure we are all on the same page as far as what they can close and what they couldn't close."
