Reds beat Cubs on rainy night

Posted: Updated:

It took a postponement and three rain delays, but the Reds did finally beat the Cubs in the series opener at Great American Ball Park.

Billy Hamilton had three hits, including his first career home run, as the Reds improved to 12-14 on the season with a 3-2 win.

Alfredo Simon, making his first start since a civil lawsuit against him went public, pitched six innings and allowed two earned runs to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Rain has now delayed games seven times in the ten games played this season at Great American Ball Park.  Those delays have added up to more than 11 hours.

The Reds will finish the series with Chicago on Wednesday.  Tony Cingrani will start for Cincinnati.

Before the game, Aroldis Chapman threw 25 pitches off the mound, without a protective screen, against Reds batters in the next step of his recovery.  Chapman said after the session he expects to pitch in a game for the first time since his injury on Thursday in Dayton.

Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said that timetable was not yet set and would likely announce Chapman's destination and date on Wednesday.
