BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Firefighters spent most of Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning battling a large fire at U.S. Pipe in Bessemer. The fire started around 11 p.m. at the plant on St. Louis Avenue in Bessemer, just off 19th Street North. It was so large, many people could see it as they were driving on Interstate 20/59.

Employees tell Fox 6 the fire started in the cement lining department. That's where they pour cement into pipes.

The entire building evacuated and most employees went to a nearby gas station to wait for more information. No injuries have been reported at this time.

Employees say about 400 people work at U.S. Pipe, but it's unclear how many work the overnight shift and were inside the building when the fire started.
