FAIRFIELD, AL (WBRC) -

Fairfield police have charged a man with attempted murder in connection to a shooting at the Western Hills Mall Tuesday.

Omar Smith is being held at the Jefferson County Jail on a $50,000 bond. Police say that the victim is in stable condition and is expected to recover from his injuries.

Chief Leon Davis, Jr. said in a press release that his investigators believe this was a "targeted incident" and "may be gang-related."

The family of the victim says he was shopping for his young daughter's birthday. Dustin Tarter's family says he was there to buy birthday shoes for his little girl. He was inside Footlocker when a man approached and shot him. Tarter is at UAB Hospital in stable condition.

Even though the man who put him in the hospital is behind bars, Tarter's mother says the family is still struggling.

"My son's still up there fighting for his life. He got his. He's sitting behind bars. He's got my son still fighting for his life," said Kim Tarter.
