MONTGOMERY, AL (WAFF) -
Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley sent a letter to the President requesting additional assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in response to the recent tornado outbreak in Alabama.
"This week's storms have had significant effects across Alabama," Bentley said Thursday. "From the tornado damage in the northern part of the state to the flooding in the south, the severe weather caused extensive damage to our citizens and communities."
The governor is requesting an expedited major disaster declaration for Alabama to provide individual and public assistance for Alabama counties impacted by the severe weather.
If granted, individual assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured losses, and other programs to help people and businesses recover.
Public assistance provides supplemental federal grant assistance for debris removal, protective measures, and the repair, replacement or restoration of damaged public facilities.
The counties included in the initial request include Baldwin, Lee, Limestone and Jefferson. Additional counties may be added in the future.
