BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Captain Jim Coker with the Hoover Police Department says a construction worker was killed on Friday morning after being struck by a vehicle.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office has identified the workers as Randy Keith Berry, 59, of Cullman. Coker says a suspect has been identified but is not in custody. He says the case will be presented to the district attorney Monday.

In a phone interview on Good Day Alabama, Coker said police and fire crews responded around 3:30 a.m. to the scene on Interstate 459 northbound near mile marker 11. He confirmed the construction worker was killed and the involved vehicle left the scene. The vehicle was later located, according to Coker. Hoover PD is investigating the case.

The accident caused major traffic problems for I-459. Eight miles of slowdown were seen on Friday morning with traffic being detoured to the shoulder of the road. The traffic cleared up shortly after rush hour Friday morning.
