AUBURN, AL (WSFA) -

Three years after Auburn officials confirmed the oak trees and soil at Toomer's Corner were poisoned with a lethal amount of the herbicide Spike 80 DF, a new chapter is opening the quest to restore the area.

The trees were removed in April of 2013, but the soil remained contaminated. Friday, Auburn University confirmed that after extensive excavation and testing, the soil around Samford Park is officially free of all poison.

The news is the latest step in the redevelopment plans of the park.
