BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

For many people a dog or cat can become like a member of the family. But did you know there are dangers in your own home, that could prove fatal to your pets?

"You've got to be concerned about the pantry and the refrigerator area. You have to be concerned about the garage and the outdoor area. You have to be concerned about the garbage cans and last but not least, cabinets where chemicals are kept," said veterinarian Andy Sokol with Caldwell Mill Animal Clinic.

According to vets the key to protecting pets is not giving them access to where hazardous materials are kept. In most cases, the animal simply doesn't know better.

"A dog smells the garbage, but he doesn't know it's to be thrown out. He thinks it smells pretty good," said Sokol.

Things like insecticides, medications, and household cleaners are all toxic. Even seasonal items like poinsettias, and holiday candy can have adverse affects.

"We just finished Easter. There are Easter baskets, Easter chocolates, they just love to get into all of that and that's a toxin," said Sokol.

The Pet Poison Helpline has a complete list of items that can be dangerous to your pets as well as tips for what to do if your pet eats something dangerous.
