KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
Kids in Kansas City got together Saturday in an effort to stop the violence.
DeWanna O'Guinn's son Ashton was murdered more than two years ago, one day after his birthday.
"I miss him. His family misses him," the mom said.
Though she can't bring her son back, O'Guinn is doing what she can to make sure it doesn't happen again.
"If the choices that they make prevent this type of hardship for their parents, for their loved ones, then this is what this is all about," she said.
That's why she spoke at the inaugural youth anti-violence rally at Calvary Chapel.
"Ending bullying is a community effort," Ronald Wilson said.
Wilson, 20, also spoke at the event. He said he was bullied for years and offered advice for kids going through the same pain.
"If you just hold your head up high, you have courage and if you have prayer you can get through it," he said.
Now Wilson is on track to graduate from Missouri Western State University, but Harold Molden knows not everyone is as lucky.
"We need to help with the youth, to help with the younger generation and be a guidance and be a support because a lot of kids didn't have that guidance and support in their lives," Molden, the youth director at Calvary Chapel, said.
This is the first time a group has put together an anti-violence rally at Calvary Chapel and they know it is only the first step towards making Kansas City a safer place.
"Not to be afraid to speak out. If you know something, say something and it turns it into a ripple effect and make a change and a difference," O'Guinn said.
It's a difference that participants hope will continue during through and beyond next year's youth anti-violence rally.
