Post-Derby crowds leave Churchill without major incident

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The second-largest crowd in Kentucky Derby history jammed the streets around Churchill Downs after Saturday's race, but largely without incident.

Military police and Louisville Metro police guarded Central Avenue, allowing buses and taxis to use the road while people stayed on the sidewalks. WAVE 3 News saw one man placed under arrest outside the track's gate along Fourth Street. Total arrest numbers weren't available late Saturday.

People jostled as the slow-moving crowd walked toward parking lots. A dance party started at Fourth and Central Avenue, as people decided to wait before trying to leave the area.

"We'll figure it out -- may hang around a bit and wait until the crowd dies out," said Royce Donovan, who was trying to get back to the University of Louisville campus.

The crowds started streaming out of Churchill Downs immediately after the Kentucky Derby finished, even though there were still two more races left in the day.

Chris Lentine was looking to profit off of people who had stood in the infield all day in uncomfortable shoes. He held sandals he'd bought from the dollar store earlier Saturday, selling them for $4 a pair.

"A lot of people come out here after walking around all day, they want to be as comfortable as possible," Lentine said. "They don't want their heels on, but they don't want to be walking around on gravel."

A Churchill Downs spokesman said 164,906 fans watched California Chrome's victory in the Kentucky Derby.
