HENRIETTA, MO (KCTV) -

A man who was able to escape the Ray County Jail and was possibly making his way to Kansas City is now in custody.

The Ray County Sheriff's Department said Jeremy Glenn Miller forced his way through a ceiling of a tank about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, allowing entry into the building attic.

In the attic, he forced the metal fencing, allowing access to the jail garage area and then outside access from the jail.

People who live feet from the jail were on edge.

"I was a little nervous to come out onto my front porch because this door here doesn't lock. I was nervous about getting into my truck because he might be hidden in my back seat or something," Georgia Bowdson said.

Bowdson lives just across the street from the jail with her husband, three children and their dog.

"I made my husband come out and get the dog because I didn't want to go outside," she said.

She said she is leaving town as quickly as possible since it is the second time her family has had to deal with this.

"Safety of the kids ... move out to the sticks somewhere," Bowdson said. "2002 or 2003 we lived on down the road and somebody escaped. Cops were shining their flashlights through the windows."

She doesn't want to go through that nightmare again.

"I just hope they catch him," Bowdson said when she first heard of the escape.

Several law enforcement agencies including the Kansas City, MO, Police Department helped with the search.

Miller has family in Grandview and Kansas City, and officials warned that may have tried to head in that direction.

He was held since last December on a probation violation. His original charge was felony property damage.

The sheriff's department did not provide any further details Tuesday night about how Miller got taken into custody.
