AVONDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

An explosion at an Avondale home Sunday morning that injured three people has been traced to a failed attempt to produce has hashish oil from marijuana, police said.

The suspects were using butane in the process, according to Avondale Police Sgt. Brandon Busse. One of them either lit a cigarette or already had one lit and it caused a flash fire in the garage, resulting in an explosion, Busse said.

Three people suffered burns to their face, neck and arms and were rushed to the Maricopa County Burn Unit. Their names were not immediately released.

The victims were conscious when first responders arrived, according to officers.

The blast caused the garage door to detach from its hinges and land on the sidewalk in front of the home at 600 S. Ninth Street.

There were five other occupants inside the home at the time of the explosion, including four children who were not injured.

Child Protective Services arrived on scene and took temporary custody of the kids.

The three injured suspects will be charged with arson of an occupied structure, possession of marijuana and endangerment.

Police said the explosion was isolated to the one property in the neighborhood.
