FAYETTEVILLE, TN (WAFF) -

The woman accused of stealing a Fayetteville Police car and taking it on a deadly joyride is set to appear in a Lincoln County courtroom Monday.

The incident happened last August, when Misty Shelton was being arrested on shoplifting charges in the parking lot of a dollar store.

Authorities said Shelton stole the police cruiser at the scene and made a high-speed escape, crashing into a sports utility vehicle and then slamming into a gas station pump. A man inside the SUV was killed.

Shelton is charged with vehicular homicide, felony evading arrest, theft, and violation of probation.

The family of the man killed in the wreck has filed a suit against Shelton, the city, and the police department, saying the incident wouldn't have happened of proper protocols had been followed.
