Supervisor Stokes says county needs to assess funding for new jail

HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Monday Hinds County supervisors could tackle whether the county needs to move forward with a new jail.

Supervisor Kenneth Stokes said before a location is determined or even before the project itself is bid out, they need to figure out if they can even fund it.

Millage rate increases could pay for it, but Stokes said two supervisors are already on record as opposing that.

"I think the best thing to do, get our financial advisor to get us a plan of how we can fund this new jail. Instead of talking about a thousand beds, let's talk about what we can afford," Stokes said.

Hinds County currently spends more than nine million dollars annually to house more than 400 inmates.

Supervisor Tony Greer said last month they spend $45 a day, but only get $16 a day from the city of Jackson.
