The Alabama Department of Corrections is celebrating National Correctional Officers and Employees Week, May 4-10.
This annual observance runs during the first full week of May and commences with a formal wreath laying ceremony which happened on May 3, at the National Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C.
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation
5187, creating National Correctional Officers' Week. In
1996, the name of the week was officially modified by Congress, becoming
National Correctional Officers and Employees Week to
include other vital members of correctional staff. The observance seeks to
commemorate the contributions of corrections professionals who work in prisons,
jails and community corrections across the country.
