DEKALB COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

The DeKalb County Sheriff is warning residents that people claiming to be from his office collecting money for missing jury duty is a scam.

Sheriff Jimmy Harris said his department is getting reports that someone is calling residents asking them to pay hundreds of dollars in supposed fines for missing jury duty. The caller says they can pay by sending out a prepaid debit card.

The Sheriff's Department is funded by the County Commission. The only money they really collect is from pistol permits, and you are usually in a line at the department when you make that transaction.

Harris said he understands people may be concerned if they're told they've missed jury duty, but said only the court system collects court fees and payments for missing court is not one of them.

"This is a pretty serious scam because people get nervous about not showing up for jury duty," he said. "First of all, the Sheriff's Office does not collect fees for anything. We can't even take cash bond down here. It is paid at the clerk's office."

If you get a call for money from someone claiming to be with the Sheriff's Office, get what information you can, including any possible Caller ID information, and report it immediately to the department. The number to call is 256-845-3801.
