When you haven't won in Boston in 39 years, a two-game sweep
by a combined two runs is a tough pill to swallow. The Red Sox defeated the
Reds 4-3 Wednesday, beating up the Reds bullpen late to get the win. The Reds
(15-18) lead the league in one-run games with a 5-11 record in 16 games.
"We've got to find ways to create some distance between
ourselves and our opponent or it's going to be like this," said Reds manager
Bryan Price. "It's going to come down to making every single play over the
course of the last three innings in order to win a game, and that's not how
baseball is supposed to be played."
Skip Schumaker started the scoring for the Reds crushing a
two-run blast in the third, his first home run with the Reds. Boston would even
the score in the sixth, but the Reds missed a golden opportunity in the
seventh. With the bases loaded and no outs, the Reds mustered just one run on a
Roger Bernadina RBI groundout.
Leading 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth, the Reds collapse
was complete when Many Parra relieved Mike Leake (7 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO).
Parra walked the first batter he faced. J.J. Hoover then stepped in and added
two more walks. Both Parra and Hoover were each responsible for an earned run
as the Red Sox took a 4-3 lead and never looked back.
Brayan Pena returned to the lineup after missing
Tuesday's game in Boston. He went 1-for-4 in the loss. The Reds have Thursday
off before they open a six-game home stand beginning with the Colorado Rockies
on Friday. Johnny Cueto gets the start for the Reds.
