MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - It's no secret that football is king in Alabama, no matter the date on the calendar. Friday, WSFA 12 News confirmed the date, time, and channel for the upcoming 2014 Raycom Media Camellia Bowl set for this December at Montgomery's Cramton Bowl.
December 20th at 8:15 p.m., ESPN cameras will be focused on Cramton Bowl.
"We'll be the only game in America at that time slot," says Johnny Williams.
The Raycom Media Camellia Bowl matches up the Sun Belt conference and the Mid-American Conference on the first night of bowl season.
"There's 39 bowl games this year, so it's been an exhaustive effort on everybody's part to put all the games between the 20th and January 1st," Williams explains.
Cramton Bowl seats 25,000 people and an 8:15 kick-off opens up a lot of opportunities for Montgomery to capitalize.
"We would love for people to come in earlier that week, maybe Thursday or Friday," says Chamber of Commerce's Dawn Hathcock, "maybe do some Christmas shopping here in Montgomery, enjoy what we have to see, go to some of our attractions while they're here, enjoy our great restaurants, and just get out and get a feel for the city."
Hathcock expects the weekend to be a time for Montgomery to shine.
"We really feel like we got a whole new city for people to come and visit," Hathcock says, "and the mayor likes to say if you haven't seen Montgomery in the last 5 years, you haven't seen Montgomery."
It's a chance to show the country what Montgomery, and the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl is becoming.
"We're just really excited about what the potential is to grow this bowl in the years to come," Williams says.
The Raycom Media Camelia Bowl is owned and operated by ESPN Events, one of only eleven post-season bowl games the division actually owns.
The Raycom Media Camellia Bowl is one of six new bowl games added this year.
The game is sponsored by Raycom Media, the parent company of this station.
