BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Authorities are investigating a shooting that happened in the Roebuck area Friday night.

Chief Deputy Randy Christian says preliminary information from the scene indicates that some deputies interrupted a drug deal at Milo's on Gadsden Highway. A suspect allegedly attempted to run over a deputy. The deputy fired his weapon and hit the suspect.

The suspect stopped his vehicle outside the Wal-Mart also on Parkway East. He was transported to UAB Hospital, where he died.

The suspect was identified by deputies as 21-year-old Devante Hinds, of Birmingham. Deputies say Hinds was in the process of meeting with other people to sell heroin.

The deputy involved is reported to be okay.
