PARCHMAN, MS (WLOX) -

Two large bags of contraband bound for Unit 29 at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman were intercepted by law enforcement officers last Saturday thanks to a tip from a diligent citizen.

Officials with the Mississippi Department of Corrections said the contraband was seized and three men were arrested after a civilian called and said a car leaving the prison grounds early in the morning tried to ram them.

Officials said Vincent McGee, 26, Oriente Taylor, 25, and Desmond Evans, 29, are charged with introduction of a controlled substance into a correctional facility, introduction of contraband into a correctional facility, two counts of conspiracy and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Officials said all three men have previous criminal records.

"I thank the civilian for alerting us to these three men getting into the Buick before they got off prison groups," said MDOC Commissioner Christopher B. Epps. "The Department of Corrections is aggressively going after people who bring in or attempt to introduce contraband."

Officials said McGee, Taylor and Evans were arrested after they crashed their car into a ditch. Authorities said a search of the area turned up the two bags and a stolen handgun from Michigan.

"We believe the individuals were attempting to throw the items over the fence but must have gotten spooked," CID Director Dean K. Smith said.

Investigators said they are trying to determine who the intended recipient inside the jail was. Netting is being installed around four units at the correctional facility in an attempt to prevent contraband from being thrown over the fence.
