State police: Third body recovered after hot air balloon crash

Posted: Updated:

The remains of the third occupant of the hot air balloon that crashed in Caroline County on Friday have been found.

State police said the search for remains  began again early Sunday morning, as more than 100 personnel from Virginia State Police, the Caroline County Sheriff's Office, Caroline County Fire & Rescue, Virginia Department of Emergency Management, Civil Air Patrol, and multiple search-and-rescue teams fanned out across the area near the Caroline Pines subdivision.

At about 11 a.m., Sunday, the remains of the third occupant were discovered. This discovery was approximately 100 yards north of where the second occupant was found Saturday, authorities said.

Now that the male pilot and two female passengers have all been located, this concludes the large-scale search efforts of the operation, State Police spokesperson Corinne Geller said. Virginia State Police and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigators are now concentrating on locating the balloon wreckage and evidence collection.

Anyone with photos or video of the balloon crash is asked to submit them by email to the NTSB at eyewitnessreport@ntsb.gov.
