RUSSELLVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Authorities are investigating after an officer-involved shooting in Russellville.

Police said the shooting happened around 11:30 p.m. Friday behind an apartment complex located on the 100 block of Filmore Street. An officer responded to the location after receiving a call about a suspicious person in the area.

According to police, the officer walked behind the building, found the suspect and attempted to stop him. Investigators said the suspect then took a defensive stance and the officer fired a stun gun twice. The suspect started to fight the officer and managed to get his gun. The two fought over the gun and the officer reportedly shot the suspect twice.

Police identified the suspect as 28-year-old Waylan "BJ" McClellan. He was taken to the Huntsville Hospital to be treated for his injuries and will be released into police custody Monday.

"Each agency has a force continuum," said Russellville Police Chief Chris Hargett. "You start with your lowest level and you work your way up - that's exactly what this officer did; I think he did everything by the book, tried talking with him first, tried talking with him during the altercation, and then it just escalated to the level it did."

The officer involved was treated and released from the hospital. He has been placed on administrative leave.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is handling the case as is standard for all officer-involved shootings.

McClellan faces charges of attempted murder, disarming a peace officer, theft of property and felon in possession of firearm. He is being held on a $250,000 bond.
