Peach growers see harvest increase

Posted: Updated:

Peaches, peaches, and more peaches! South Georgia farmers have been harvesting and packing their peach crop for about 10 days now, and so far they like what they're seeing.

"It's a lot better than last year's crop," said Burton Brooks Orchard owner Mike Abbot. "We probably got 75 percent of our crop [harvested] this year. Last year we had about 25 percent of our crop."

The numbers don't surprise Abbott, given how unusually cold this past winter was.

"We felt good about this year," he recalled. "We had plenty of chill hours. Everything looked real good."

And that makes farmers even more excited for the harvesting and packing season.

"We really look forward to it, said Abbott. "We get to start back workin' again and get some of our money back hopefully."

If you're not already looking forward to the peach packing season, visitors can stop by Burton Brooks Orchard and buy some homemade peach ice cream. That may just change your mind.

The harvesting and packing will continue until about the first of July. This year it looks like there will be plenty to go around.
