Community responds with a car for good deeds

BAINBRIDGE, GA (WALB) -

A Bainbridge teen encourages an entire community to pay it forward. This deserving man was rewarded for his selflessness and willingness to help others.

Billy Simmons listens to music in his new car, a simple pleasure that he couldn't enjoy before. But thanks to one teen who pushed the community to pay it forward, Simmons has a new set of wheels.

"I couldn't believe it, I told my girlfriend Sandy that we got a car, she couldn't believe it either, I was just covered in tears," said Simmons.   Last Friday, 15 year old Ellie Jeter surprised Simmons, who is disabled, with the car.

Jeter says after watching Simmons give his only mattress away to a family in need she was motivated to help him during his time of need.

With a plan and a prayer she reached out to the community to raise money to purchase a Firebird for Simmons.

"Up until the end we didn't tell him that we had bought it because he still thought he was going to have to pay for it," said Jeter. "Right before he got in the car we told him the last part and that he would not have to pay for anything that the community had taken care of it."

Simmons works at Walmart and while he admits he doesn't have much to give, what he does have he gives freely.   "I just like to help people, it was a blessing from God…"

While Jeter says she didn't do it for the fanfare, her heart for helping has really captivated the community.   "God showed me through it all, that this is what I needed to do and it was a life changing experience that I will never forget."

Walmart also contributed by paying for insurance on the car for a full year.
