Spring cleaning should include air conditioner

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Many people are out working on their yards and gardens this time of year, and when you come inside you want to relax in a cool house.

If you don't take care of your air conditioner when you are doing your other spring cleaning you won't have a cool house to go in to.

One easy thing you can do right now is clean out the weeds around the air conditioner outside to keep it clear and also have it checked out by a professional.

JD McGregor with McGregor Heating & Cooling said, "It's a good idea to have them checked every season, especially if they have some age on them.  Once they get two or three years old you really should get them checked, you know before the season really gets started good."

There are several other things you can do to be sure your air conditioner is in good condition as well.

Keith Glaub with Arkansas Air said, "Take an extra minute to wash that unit out with a water hose, while you're out there, and if you can keep it clean it will work a lot better for you."

Not only will it keep your air conditioner working properly, but it will save you money.

McGregor said, "If you don't keep it clean and you don't keep it serviced the way that it should it can cause you some repair bills that you would not have seen otherwise."

More things you can do around the house to prepare it include adding caulk to areas that may have cracks where cool air is leaking out, like around windows and doorways, and remember to replace the filters.
