Moody plans active-shooter exercise Friday

LOWNDES CO., GA (WALB) -

This Friday, Moody AFB officials will put their personnel through an exercise to test their readiness, in the event of an active shooter aboard the post.

It will happen between 8:00 in the morning, and noon, and civilians may see increased activity around the base for this event.

Moody officials provided this information-

The 23d Wing at Moody Air Force Base is scheduled to hold an active-shooter response exercise on Friday, May 16, 2014, to test the base's emergency response and lockdown procedures.

The exercise is slated for the morning between 8 a.m. and noon, and will likely result in gate closures, traffic delays, and the closure of base customer service agencies.

Local residents should also expect to see an increased presence of both military and civilian first responder units with emergency lights and sirens.  All personnel on base will be expected to follow the instructions of exercise responders and facility managers.

"These exercises are critical in training base personnel on the proper ways to seek safety and ensuring personnel understand the level of threat an active shooter incident could pose," said Lt. Col. Joshua Hughes, 23d Wing director of staff.  "We need to practice our lockdown procedures and test our response efforts on a regular basis because an active shooter can be a serious threat at any time."

Questions can be directed to the 23d Wing Public Affairs office at 229-257-4146.
