BUTLER CO., AL (WSFA) -

A veteran employee of the Alabama Department of Corrections in under arrest after officials say he traveled to Butler County to pick up drugs with the intention of redistributing it inside the prison system.

Butler County Sheriff Kenny Harden says on May 11 the suspect, corrections officer David Brooks, was apprehended after meeting with an undercover officer. Brooks, who has been with the Corrections Department for 15 years, is now charged with conspiracy to traffick methamphetamines.

Authorities say a search of Brook's home in Pike County netted additional drug-related materials which were also seized as evidence.

The Butler County Sheriff's Department and ADOC's own Security Threat Group, Investigative Unit are to be commended for their work in apprehending Brooks," said the Alabama Department of Corrections in a statement. "This is a sign that ADOC is making progress in its concerted efforts to bring any employee that abuses the law to justice. The department will continue working with other law enforcement agencies in the future to do so."
