BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Jefferson County commissioners have approved 10 contracts with various hospitals that are agreeing to provide health care for indigent patients.

Now that Cooper Green is no longer a hospital, the other hospitals will provide overnight stays for the poor.

The contracts, which amounted to about $14 million, include agreements with UAB, UAB Medical West, St. Vincents and the Baptist Health Systems.

County commissioners say their next goals are to move to community clinics and get a permanent director for Cooper Green Mercy Health Services on board. An interim director is currently serving at Cooper Green.

Commissioners unanimously approved the contracts. Commissioner Sandra Little Brown called it a step toward quality health care.
