Coffee County detectives investigating phone scam

COFFEE COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

Authorities in one South Georgia county are asking folks to be aware of a scam.

Coffee County Sheriff Doyle Wooten says they've had several reports of a phone scam where the caller disguises their number, claiming to be with the sheriff's office, then tells the victim they have a citation or missed jury duty and owe money.

Detectives say then the scammer tells the victim to purchase a GreenDot card, which is a prepaid debit card, and mail it to them.

Authorities say the scammers usually target the elderly. "If it's the elderly it really intimidates them. It really worries them when you start talking about locking people up.  It makes a victim out of them," said Sheriff Wooten.

"We just want the people to know that we don't operate that way. That the minute they hear anybody wanting them to go get a GreenDot card to pay a fine, that's bogus. They need to just hang up, don't give them any personal information."

Sheriff Doyle Wooten asks residents to call the sheriffs office immediately if they believe they have been scammed or if someone tried to scam them.

Detectives are investigating.
